The first Learning & Development in Broadcasting Conference, held in October 2008, was attended by over 150 professionals from across the industry and was hailed as a great success. It achieved many of its aims - sharing best practice, learning from others within and without the industry, hearing about new learners and new ways of learning, tracking change and providing an excellent networking opportunity.

The Learning & Development in Broadcasting Conference 09 took place on Tuesday 13 October 2009 at BAFTA and was chaired by broadcaster Maggie Philbin.

Maggie Philbin has worked in radio and television for 30 years on a wide range of science, medical and technology programmes. Currently providing analysis and comment on technology for BBC Breakfast News and a regular reporter on BBC 1's 'Inside Out', she has a unique resonance with audiences, having grown up with them on much loved shows like 'Swap Shop', 'Hospital Watch' and 'Tomorrow's World'. Additionally, Maggie's extensive radio and television career has also included working with ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5. In 2007 she and the BBC Radio Berkshire news team beat the Today Programme at the Sony Awards for the quality of their news coverage.

She is keen to help improve the visibility of successful scientists and engineers, both to encourage young people and women to pursue careers and reach top positions in these areas. In November 2008, she pioneered 'TeenTech', a lively interactive one day event which brought 400 young teenagers, scientists and technology companies together.

Comments from last year's conference

"There are lots of conferences that people can get out to but rarely is there this opportunity to explore topics specific to our industry - it's this that makes the day incredibly valuable." Peter Hallard, ITV

"It's opened up the possibilities of understanding the media industry and broadcast industry in general, some of the challenges that not only we at Discovery face but understanding some of the challenges the smaller companies face." Judy Goldberg, Discovery

Conference Organisers

Conference organised by the BTSR

In the present business climate BTSR thinks that it is more important than ever to bring the Learning & Development community within the broadcast industry together to continue the debate and share experiences from the past year.

The conference was organised by BTSR, taking into account feedback from last year's conference and with the help of an Advisory Panel. This year the focus was put on practical support and guidance for the Learning & Development community through a series of keynote addresses and multi choice workshops.

Advisory Panel

BTSR has been developing the conference themes with an Advisory Panel of senior colleagues in Learning & Development across the broadcast industry to provide a forum for lively debate with thought leaders from inside and outside the industry.

The reception will continue after the ceremony until 1930 to allow further opportunities for networking.

These awards are organised by the partnership of Skillset, Ofcom and the BTSR in conjunction with UK Skills and The National Training Awards. They have been judged by a panel of independent experts, most of whom have significant experience of the broadcast industry. The Broadcast Industry Training Awards Ceremony is an opportunity for real achievement and excellence to be recognised and celebrated.

We are delighted to announce that Baroness Helena Kennedy will be presenting the awards at the National Training Awards for the Broadcast Industry 2009 ceremony. Described as 'the nation's favourite Portia' Helena Kennedy QC is one of Britain's leading lawyers. It is very fitting that Baroness Kennedy should present the awards as she is a great champion of excellence in education and training through her work and her own life experiences.
